About the Initiative

Building Diversity in Erie's Construction Industry

Since 1995, Premier Education Services has been promoting the value of career advancement through all forms of training. We lead the effort to increase minority membership in Erie's building trade unions, partnering with unions, contractors, and community organizations to ensure that major construction projects reflect our community's diversity.

From the Bayfront Convention Center to UPMC Hamot and Erie Insurance Arena, our apprentices contribute to the projects that shape Erie's future. For over 29 years, we've been opening doors for women and minorities to access stable, well-paying careers in the skilled trades.

Building Trade Professions

Explore 12 rewarding career paths in the skilled trades. Each offers excellent wages, benefits, and long-term job security.

Bricklayers

Build and repair walls, partitions, arches, and other structures using brick, block, and stone.

Carpenters

Construct, install, and repair structures and fixtures made of wood, plywood, and wallboard.

Cement Masons

Smooth and finish surfaces of poured concrete floors, walls, sidewalks, and curbs.

Electricians

Install, maintain, and repair electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures in buildings.

Glaziers

Install glass in windows, skylights, storefronts, and display cases for buildings.

Iron Workers

Install structural and reinforcing iron and steel to form buildings, bridges, and roads.

Laborers

Perform physical tasks at construction sites including loading, digging, and site preparation.

Operating Engineers

Operate heavy construction equipment including cranes, bulldozers, and excavators.

Apply paint, stain, varnish, and other finishes to buildings and other structures.

Start earning immediately with a percentage of the journeyman wage. Full fringe benefits begin on day one, including health insurance and retirement.

Learn On The Job

Work alongside experienced journeymen on real construction projects. Apprenticeships run 3–5 years with a probationary first year. You'll receive raises every six months.

Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizenship required
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at time of application
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. with transcripts
  • Valid Pennsylvania driver's license with reliable transportation
  • Must pass an aptitude examination and interview
  • Must pass a substance abuse test
  • Must agree to follow all union rules and regulations

Education and training are provided at no cost to you. There is a variable application fee that depends on the specific trade (payable by cash or money order only). Once accepted, you earn wages from day one while receiving all your training for free.

Apprenticeships vary from 3 to 5 years depending on the trade. The first year is a probationary period. Throughout the program, you'll receive on-the-job training under the supervision of experienced journeymen and earn raises every six months.

You start earning a percentage of the full journeyman rate immediately, with raises every six months. Full fringe benefits — including health insurance, retirement, and more — begin on your very first day. As a journeyman, you'll earn top-tier wages in a stable, in-demand profession.

No prior experience is required. Apprenticeship programs are designed to teach you everything you need to know. You'll learn on the job from experienced professionals while attending related classroom instruction.
